    The English Department of Hunter College, City University of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with specialization in any area of medieval literature and culture, broadly defined (c. 600-1500), including but not limited to Old English, Old Norse, Middle English, history of the English language, manuscript studies, digital humanities, medieval drama, Arthurian romance, and the literature of medieval Ireland, Scotland, or Wales, beginning in Fall 2026. Applications from scholars whose research features an interdisciplinary and/or global approach to the study of the medieval period are especially encouraged to apply. We welcome candidates whose scholarship and teaching convey the vitality and complexity of this time and its literature to our students.

    In recent years, the Department of Manuscripts has been more active than ever developing and expanding our programs of exhibitions, publications, education, and online resources. Interns in the department work with the Museum’s collection of illuminated manuscripts in a variety of contexts. They will have the opportunity to work on an exhibition, to collaborate on the Museum’s interactive multimedia program, to conduct research on the collection, and to observe at close hand how a curatorial department functions. The Getty also offers the opportunity to get to know scholars from all over the world, including Manuscripts Department guest scholars and conservators in residence at the Museum as well as the Getty Research Institute scholars. We are welcome applicants who are eager to work on projects that are vital and relevant to contemporary, diverse audiences both in and outside of the galleries. We give all qualified applications careful consideration.

    Melvin R. Seiden Curator and Department Head, Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts

    (Full-time)

    The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the position of Melvin R. Seiden Curator and Department Head of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts (the “Seiden Curator”), overseeing the Morgan’s exceptional collection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. With the department’s two Assistant (or Associate) Curators, the Seiden Curator conceives and executes exhibitions, stewards the care of the collection and its growth, conducts research and publishes on the collection, and helps provide appropriate access to the collection to researchers, students, and the general public.

    The Seiden Curator is a leader in the field, well-regarded among peers, who is comfortable participating in a wide range of activities related to medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and is skillful in their ability to relate to varied constituencies inside and outside the Morgan. Departmental strategic planning, donor relations, staff supervision, and budgeting are important responsibilities of this position.

    Responsibilities:

    • Oversees the long-term preservation of the collection for the institution, the scholarly community, and the general public.
    • Conceives, initiates, and executes in-house and loan exhibitions, rotations, and displays. This involves active participation in all aspects of exhibition planning, including but not limited to identifying loans, writing and editing catalogues, design and installation, preparation of didactic materials, and media relations.
    • Researches, catalogues, and documents the collection, updating records on a continuing basis.
    • Manages, mentors, and leads departmental staff including two other full-time curators and occasional fellows or interns.
    • In concert with the Director, reviews potential acquisitions to the collection, through purchase or gift.
    • Participates in scholarship, public programming (K-12, college and graduate level, adult), digital projects, outside publications, and teaching.
    • Cultivates donors, manages the department’s Visiting Committee, and works with Development colleagues on grants and other funding initiatives.
    • Contributes to Morgan-wide initiatives, including serving on staff committees or project teams, as required.

    Requirements:

    • Ph.D. in art history with an emphasis on manuscript illumination and medieval art, required. Strong liberal arts foundation preferred, especially in Western European art history, but could also include history and religion.
    • Specialized knowledge of medieval and Renaissance manuscript illumination and codicology, along with a deep knowledge of medieval and Renaissance art and history.
    • Substantial experience working with illuminated manuscripts in an institutional setting.
    • Reading knowledge of Latin required, and at least one other European language preferred.
    • Strong organizational, research, and social skills for curating major exhibitions. Experience curating exhibitions is required.
    • Demonstrated strength in writing and public speaking, for both scholarly and public audiences.
    • Familiarity with the principles of the care and handling of rare books and manuscripts.
    • Experience with acquisitions; current knowledge of the manuscript and book trade.
    • Comfort interacting socially with Board members, donors, collectors, and the public and in participating in online audience development efforts such as social media.
    • Professional knowledge of electronic cataloging and digitization of manuscript materials is desirable.
    • Supervisory and administrative experience is required.
    • Ability to work on several short-, mid-, and long-term projects at once and to manage overlapping deadlines; comfortable managing rapidly shifting priorities and individual and institutional needs.
    • Ability to embrace routine and essential administrative tasks.
    • Well-developed computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Familiarity with museum and library database systems such as TMS and Voyager highly desirable.
    • Willingness and ability to travel on occasional courier trips, in consultation with the Registrar and Morgan conservators. Travel for exhibition research and development is also required as needed. Percentage of travel time is unlikely to exceed 10%. Some travel requires extended hours and long periods of standing or riding in transport vehicles.

    Compensation:

    $127,000 - $147,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits.

    STUDENT ESSAY PRIZE/PRIX POUR LE TRAVAIL ÉTUDIANT

    Students are encouraged to submit a paper for the Student Essay Prize in French or English, which may be an exceptional essay written as part of coursework. The essay must not have been published or presented elsewhere. Both graduate and undergraduate essays by registered students will be considered. A letter of confirmation of student status from a professor is
    required.

    Award: 
    – graduate prize: $500; undergraduate prize: $300
    – a one-year membership in the society
    – opportunity to present the essay at the annual meeting

    If the winning essay is delivered in person, a modest travel stipend will be added.

    Deadline: January 31, 2026.
    The winner will be notified by February 28, 2026.

    Prize-winning papers will be offered the opportunity to be mentored in the process of turning an excellent course-work paper into a publishable scholarly article, followed by publication in Studies in Religion / Sciences religieuses.

    Description

    The Department of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a tenure-track professor of medieval history (1100-1500) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, to begin August 1, 2026. 

    This position will include interdisciplinary exchange on campus related to our partnership with affiliated departments through the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The teaching load is 2/2. The candidate’s teaching responsibilities include the Western Civilization survey as well as upper-level and graduate courses that complement the department’s current offerings.

    UTK is a land-grant university and values engaged forms of research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching and service, and considers evidence of these commitments in the records of applicants.

    The city of Knoxville is a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, a diverse music scene, active neighborhoods, unique restaurants, and a robust offering of outdoor and cultural activities.     Qualifications

    Candidates must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. The position requires an active research agenda and evidence of teaching effectiveness. While all subfields and methodologies are eligible, training and/or experience in digital history is particularly welcome. Incoming Assistant Professors must have plans for the publication of their first book. Associate Professors must have a book published with a suitable press, demonstrable teaching excellence in their area(s) of specialization, and a strong record of service.

    Professor - Late Antiquity

    U of T Department of Classics / Centre for Medieval Studies

     

    The Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the area of Late Antiquity.

     

    This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Classics (75%) and the Centre for Medieval Studies (25%). The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

    The successful candidate will also be eligible to be named the Jackman Professorship in the Arts. This endowed chair appointment would be for a five-year term and is renewable following a favourable review.
