    SMFS Rising Star Grant

    Due: October 15, 2026.

    Purpose 

    This grant program supports the work of BIPOC medieval studies scholars whose work addresses the intersections of two or more of the following areas: race, gender, sexuality, disability, and social justice. This award particularly seeks to support work focused on medieval law/legal discourse; the work of scholar-activists; and/or those researching historical dimensions of racial justice issues.

    The award is intended to support BIPOC medieval scholars who are in early stages of their career (e.g. graduate students and ECRs), independent scholars, or members of the academic precariate, in an effort to provide timely, meaningful support and to help their work become visible to the larger scholarly community. It is intended for the development of a conference paper, a journal article, or a dissertation chapter.  

    Grant amount

    One grant of $500 awarded annually

    Eligibility

          Who can apply? BIPOC medieval scholars who are in early stages of their career (e.g. graduate students and ECRs), independent scholars, or members of the academic precariate.

          For what kinds of projects?  Projects with an intersectional scope and methodology (see details in “purpose’) such as conference papers, library visit, doctoral research/writing, or essay completion.

          Membership? Applicants do not need to be members of SMFS, but a free two-year membership will be offered as part of the award. 

          Residence? This competition is global and therefore open to BIPOC scholars residing anywhere in the world. 

    Application process and materials required

          The form will ask for your name, contact info (email and postal address), project title, area(s) of academic study, university affiliation if applicable, current employment/student status, and a proposal (300-400 words).

          The form will also ask you to upload a copy of your CV.

    The Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in Medieval Philosophy. This will be a joint appointment between the Department of Philosophy (75%) and the Centre for Medieval Studies (25%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

    Check out Jacqueline's article, published in The Conversation on July 2. It's entitled "When ‘man’ didn’t mean humanity: How language excluded women for centuries". Jacqueline's work as an historian of medieval gender and sexuality allows her to explore the ways in which anti-feminism and misogyny, seeing a resurgence in the 2020s, has a long history in how women were discussed in ancient and medieval Western cultures.  Check Jacqueline's article out here

    Le Prix Alma des Jeunes Chercheur·euses 2026 vise à récompenser des travaux innovants en histoire, littérature, philosophie ou philologie médiévales réalisés par des étudiant·es de maîtrise ou récemment diplômé·es.

    La personne lauréate recevra :

    • une bourse de 500 € ;
    • une aide financière et logistique en vue de la publication de son travail.

    Le concours est ouvert aux personnes :

    • titulaires d'au moins un M1 ou d'un master ;
    • âgées de moins de 30 ans ;
    • non titulaires d'un doctorat ;
    • membres de l'association Alma-Recherche.

    The Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, invites applications for a grant-funded, two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Dictionary of Old English

    The successful candidate will have a PhD in English, Medieval Studies, or a comparable discipline by the time of appointment. Applicants must have expertise in Old English language, familiarity with the corpus of Old English, and excellent research ability. Proficiency in Latin and experience with Old English paleography are essential, and familiarity with basic lexicographical principles is highly desirable. The successful candidate will work with the editors in drafting entries for the Dictionary of Old English and will also pursue an independent research project of their choice under the supervision of the editors. 

    This position offers a rare opportunity to participate in team research in the humanities and therefore requires the ability to work well with other members of the project. 

    Salary: CAD $50,000 per year

    Postdoctoral Fellowship, DEfOE, Dictionary of Old English

    The Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, invites applications for a grant-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship based at the Dictionary of Old English (DOE), for DEfOE (Data Engineering for Old English), a partnership between the DOE and the Ansund project at Trinity College Dublin. 

    The successful candidate will have a PhD in English, Medieval Studies, or a comparable discipline by the time of appointment. Applicants must have expertise in Old English language, familiarity with the corpus of Old English, and excellent research ability. Proficiency in Latin and experience with Old English paleography are highly desirable. Familiarity with computational methods (such as text processing, data cleaning and transformation, etc.) may also be an advantage.

    The successful candidate will work with the DOE and Ansund staff on a multifaceted project aimed at updating the Dictionary of Old English Corpus, improving the utility of the DOE’s List of Texts, and facilitating alignment between DOE texts and variant manuscript versions. The position will be based in Toronto, with some training taking place in Dublin during the first year of the fellowship. 

    This position offers a rare opportunity to participate in international team research in the humanities and therefore requires the ability to work well with other members of the DOE and Ansund projects. 

    Salary: CAD $50,000 per year

    Announcing a large Marie Sklodowska-Curie research project, funded by the European Union. The Project is seeking candidates for eleven (11) fully-funded doctoral fellowships in medieval Arthurian Studies to be hosted in institutions across Europe (UK, Iceland, France, Holland, Switzerland and Italy). Feel free to pass the information to your departments or to any interested MA level graduate students.

    The deadline for applications for the positions in Iceland is 29 April. The deadline for applying for the remaining positions is 4 May 2026.
